Hi ApeCoin DAO Community,
@srsly has responded to our questions and has provided consent to share them in this forum for the community.
Expand for Q&A
- Is the Ape Foundation expected to engage in any of the steps of the AIP implementation? If so, please specify the steps and elaborate on how it is expected to work.
No engagement from the Ape Foundation is expected
- Would your expectation be to keep complete full ownership of content produced from this proposal?
We follow the license model of the Bored Ape Yacht Club, meaning that with the transfer of the ApeFacingApe NFT, the commercial rights to that specific Ape are transferred to the new owner. This transfer is automatic and tied directly to the ownership of the NFT.
Owners have the right to use their Ape Facing Ape image for any commercial endeavor they choose, without a cap on revenue. This includes using the image for branding, creating derivative works, and incorporating it into various products and services. While the owner has extensive commercial rights, the creators of ApeFacingApes, retain the underlying copyright of the art. This ensures that we can promote the broader brand while giving individual owners significant freedom with their specific NFT.
- a) The ApeFacingApes.com editor does not currently require Web3 wallet connectivity, would this proposal require any Web3 connectivity?
b) If so, is there a security audit plan in place, and will you share the audit report with the ApeCoin DAO?
No web3 connection is required for this proposal. If in future any web3 connectivity features are built, we will transparently share all audit reports with the ApeCoin DAO. Our contract was “mini-audited” by 0xQuit.
- Please describe the utility or purpose of the AFA Token.
The AFA token has the simple utility to give all BAYC holders access to their front facing perspective, independently from any centralized front-end. The images are stored on IPFS to maximize decentralization and accessibility.
Future utilization will of course also be easier with an NFT in place.
- Would the success of this proposal depend on the price of ApeCoin at the time of disbursement?
One ApeCoin is one ApeCoin. The success of this proposal is independent of the ApeCoin price at the time of disbursement. We believe in ApeCoin and we take the risks that come with volatility of the price.
- Your proposal links to 3looks.io, a site that can’t be reached, would you like to update this to 3look.io?
This was a typo and we indeed would like to change it to 3look.io. Thanks for spotting!
- Does the “CallToApe” function require gas when used, and if so who pays the gas fee?
Yes, CallToApe is a transaction and requires gas. Whoever executes the transaction has to pay the gas fee. CallToApe can be executed on someone else’s behalf, so it doesn’t have to be the Ape owner who calls the transaction.
- Your proposal states “we are immensely happy that YUGA LABS committed to implement our frontal Ape versions and the link to our editor into their official BAYC profile page”, please provide proof of consent from Yuga Labs.
- Please outline the process by which “OG AFA holders” would claim their unique physical appreciation item.
We will openly communicate through different channels (X, discord, website) and make every OG aware about the OG package.
For the claim process we will utilize tropee.com, which is a proven industry standard for raffles and token gated claims. OG’s will have 90 days to claim their package.
Delivery can be done via mail or personally at events like ApeFest.
- Please provide a more thorough description of your team including any relevant professional and academic history.
All team members originally come from Germany.
Gratwanderer is a 39 year old architect with years of experience and many won competitions and realized projects. He successfully played in Germanys first indoor hockey league for many years. He is coming from a family of artists and, since his childhood, is illustrating and painting. He was fascinated by the web3 space and contributed with his art to some smaller NFT projects. While watching BAYC from the sidelines, his goal always was to purchase one from his earnings as an artist.
srsly, also 39, is an OG Ape who witnessed all ups and downs in the BAYC universe. He is a graduate of International Business and works in a global corporate. In his early career he leveled up in the area of sales while more recently transitioned into business management and marketing. He is passionate about web3, poker and triathlon.
cophi,33 years old, currently living in beautiful Portugal, is a civil engineer. He focused on renewable energies and aims to make the world a better place. He loves sports and outdoor activities. He is renowned for his community management skills at many web3 projects, like TwoBitBears, Ledger and Hennessy.
- Please provide a schedule which you will commit to for sharing progress reports to the community.
After the AIP passed we will frequently share updates with our community. In the first weeks we will have weekly updates on X and discord. Many of our milestones are planned early and require us to constantly give status updates. After delivering first milestones we will switch to a biweekly and later monthly cadence. Rest assured that we will openly and transparently share where we are and what are our next steps.
- Your budget outlines costs of 87,000 APE for “3 years asset delivery and editor updates.”
Please elaborate.
- Include the project’s start and end dates.
Our three year period starts immediately with the successful passing of the AIP. It then runs until end of 2027, which is even longer than 3 years.
- Identify any milestones and key performance indicators throughout the 3-year period.
We roughly estimate 3 new assets per month and in total 108 for 3 years. There will be slots allocated, which we will fill with own creations, creations for MBA project and creations for Ape communities. MBA projects and communities can apply for a slot through our ticketing system in discord.
- Detail the associated cost, any required personnel, and the platforms which would be used.
Cost are mainly for illustration, as well as project management, website and editor maintenance and marketing. The core team of us three will be fully cpable and responsible for delivering the assets. Platforms used are our own website and editor. Marketing will happen through channels like X, discord and website.
- “6. Fun activations for irl events, like ApeFest: Implementation: Ongoing Cost: Included in project cost”
We recognize that you would like to keep these details “redacted” to the community, however for the benefit of our review, please elaborate on this step of your proposal.
- Include the expected start and end dates.
Start date immediately after the AIP passed. Prototyping is already ongoing. The end date is after ApeFest, but the end product will remain available for future Ape Events.

~42k $APE gas fees for Airdrop”
Would you be open to launching on ApeChain in order to mitigate these gas fees? The testnet is currently live, and there may be some additional ecosystem support available for projects choosing to launch on ApeChain.
Generally we love the idea of ApeChain. L2’s are generally much cheaper and faster. After talking to our devs though, we realized, that it not as trivial as one might expect. The main difficulty here is that BAYC is on the mainnet, meaning you can’t simply query in the smart contract who owns BAYC 123 on Apechain (and L2s in general). For the airdrop, this isn’t such a big problem, as we can take a snapshot and then mint the NFT to all the wallets from that snapshot. For our CallToApe function, it gets trickier. There are two options:
Option 1: Our backend includes the info in the Call To Ape request, the smart contract verifies that the info comes from us and then uses it. This, unfortunately, is no longer trustless, as the backend server could theoretically provide any address. The smart contract can only verify that the info comes from us, not whether it is correct.
Option 2: We use a cross-chain protocol, probably Layer Zero, to send data cross-chain. This is naturally more complex and incurs higher gas costs, as a transaction will also be executed on the mainnet. It would need to happen in two steps: 1. Send the request to L1, 2. The actual function, which can now use the response from the request on L2. Additionally, the protocol must support Apechain.
Currently, only Option 1 would work, while Option 2 would require waiting for Apechain to be supported.
Perhaps Apechain offers its own way to facilitate interaction with BAYC on Apechain?
Happy to hear your thoughts.
On another note: When we calculated gas fees they were significantly higher than today. Any ETH we save on the airdrop we could either give back to the DAO or produce more photo booth accessories, for greater availability, beyond ApeFest
