It would be good to get blockchain clubs to form delegations. I know Arbitrum has delegations from Princeton and Bristol Universities.
Also what do you mean by the title “Future of DAO Legitimacy”. What is your understanding of using the word Legitimacy?
Thanks
Hi bigbull,
I’ve been working with Kara and the RTM team on answering the questions that the GwG sent to us, and we’re almost done with that - just formatting the answers. To answer your specific question, to me, legitimacy carries with it the idea, held by influential, international members of financial, governmental, academic, legal and business administrations that something is important, should be studied, better understood, and implemented (judiciously).
DAOs are a very new form of organizational structure that, so far, have yielded relatively few tangible results outside a very specific and narrow ecosystem of crowdfunding and governing, often in a de facto centralized manner, crypto and web3 projects, often for individual financial gain. While blockchain, and, to a lesser extent, Bitcoin, are being accepted as “legitimate”, particularly with the large capital inflows to the US ETFs, DAOs are relatively unexplored.
Having a significantly large treasury of crypto does not guarantee that international bodies will show interest in DAOs. Currently, I believe only three US states allow for a DAO corporation, and many DAOs choose to incorporate as a traditional LLC (as I believe ApeCoin does) in either Delaware or a tax haven such as the Seychelles or Cayman Islands. The whole area of DAO studies is nascent and is not taken particularly seriously by those outside Web3.
I see this as a great opportunity for ApeCoin DAO. As you mentioned, many universities have blockchain clubs, but DAOs are still not widely known because, while there are thousands of them, their social and interpersonal impacts, results, effectiveness as a form of business or public goods organization, sustainability, governance, and ability to overcome the free rider problem (among many other issues) have not seriously been studied with much rigor. Blogposts, Mirror articles, and Twitter spaces, sure, but little academic rigor.
This is where I think our project comes in - to bring academic rigor to studies of ApeCoin DAO and the DAO space in general (and metaverse space), working hand in hand with members of the DAO, and to publish in peer-reviewed journals with reasonably high impact factors. This will open ApeCoin DAO up to entirely new, influential, international members of the financial, governmental, academic, legal and business administrations, hopefully demonstrating that DAOs are important, should be studied, better understood, and implemented (widely).
I personally envision that within the next 5-10 years, most large multinational corporations will integrate DAO structures as spin-offs, replicating democratized start-ups, as part of their organizational structures. I think that whichever organization is pioneering the actual careful, rigorous, documented studies of DAOs will prosper and become a well-known name, the way that Toyota integrated W. Edward Deming’s ideas of TQM into their forward-looking technologies to create their management system, which they market to companies internationally.

Kind Regards,
Its a great proposal! I have not looked through all the comments and therefore may have missed what I am about to ask. But I wonder, apart from the glory and fame and marketing, what is in it for ApeDAO? Also, should research not rather be funded by others if ApeDAO is its object? That may give it more legitimacy.
What’s in it for ApeCoin is really long term legitimacy, increased awareness from a huge global audience that currently doesn’t know (or care) about the Web3 space, and lots of potential funding and recognition from universities and intenational organizations. This is about the next decade, the future of legally compliant, legitimate network states and giving ApeCoin a seat at the table.
This really isn’t about the glory or fame of marketing. Many AIPs talk about “education”, which is transferring knowledge and skills from one party to another, but very few discusses the creation of legitimized knowledge. This requires a level of academic rigor that isn’t necessary exciting, but is what establishes a project as something to be taken seriously by the Web1 world of government, universities and NGOs. That’s where long term stability is.
Researching ApeCoin isn’t the main part of this. It’s about researching the DAO space in general, but equally about proper methodology and publishing in legitimate academic journals, about onboarding a group of highly educated scholars and students to join the DAO. Again, I know this isn’t as exciting as some AIPs, but the return to the DAO is immeasurable.
I understand your point. This is like when the US Dairy Council pays money for some research group to study why milk is good for you. There’s inherent bias. This is why we’re studying the DAO space in general. The research isn’t about why ApeCoin DAO is great, but about issues in the DAO space such as organizational behavior, legitimacy, network states, decentralized governance and incentivization of voting. ApeCoin may serve as a case study, and we will work with members of the DAO who have knowledge to share, but this isn’t research about ApeCoin funded by ApeCoin. It’s meant to be research about the DAO space for the benefit of the DAO space. What ApeCoin gets is all the people who care about studying DAOs coming together under their banner.
Would you be able to get additional funds from other sources? Either traditional funding sources for Academic research and/or from other DAO grants as well?
Traditional funding source are unlikely. They typically fund specific studies, not putting together a journal or gathering an international team of students and academics. The purpose of this proposal is to forward ApeCoin DAO and bring together scholars under that banner. Traditional funding sources don’t have any vested interest in that.
As for other DAO grants, I will certainly look into it. Research is collaborative, so I will definitely seek to onboard other DAOs into this. I believe that the future of this space truly depends on DAOs being collectively researched for global legitimacy.
Hi ApeCoin DAO Community,
@DavidW has requested to withdraw their application. This AIP will be moved to and remain in the Withdrawn AIPs category.
