1. Has the holder of “ape.eth” been identified, and if so have you engaged in any discussions with them regarding its potential sale?
I have had zero contact with the owner of “ape.eth”.
The Twitter-X User (“ENSBroker/ @broker_ens”) says that “he/ENSBroker had been in contact with this User” in the past…but ENSBroker says that “no new contact had been made” since I mentioned my AIP Idea/proposal.
I went to the “ape.eth” ENS owners OpenSea account, which identified its Twitter-X-Account as (@ape_dot) on X, linked here: x.com …I followed this Users Twitter-X-account, as of now, but there is no “Open DM” function via their X-profile. “No discussions have been engaged” with the owner regarding the potential sale of “ape.eth”.
2. Beyond your “Additional Requests to the APE Foundation” section, what role (if any) would the APE Foundation be expected to play in the day-to-day operations of ANS?
The APE Foundation would not be expected to play a role in the day-to-day operations of the Ape.eth Name Service (ANS). The day-to-day management, development, and ongoing updates for ANS would be handled by the dedicated ANS team and any contractors or developers brought on for the project.
The APE Foundation’s role would primarily involve supporting ANS at key stages and providing visibility through the additional requests listed, such as promotional support, joint PR efforts, and co-marketing. Once ANS is live, the Foundation’s involvement would be limited to governance oversight, (ie: ensuring that ANS renewal fees are “reasonably priced” with community interests).
If there are any future governance-related decisions (like fee adjustments), those would be brought to the DAO for a vote, but the Foundation wouldn’t be involved in the daily management or technical operations of the service. This structure ensures 1. the independence ANS, 2. the independence of the ANS team, and 3. allowing the DAO to guide the project’s larger strategic direction, while allowing the community to benefit from service ownership.
Note: If the voting “responsibility for governance-related decisions” is too much responsibility for the APE Foundation and APE DAO, then these “governance oversight responsibilities” can be given directly to the .ape/ANS multi-sig holders.
3. In terms of revenue generated via subname registration fees and renewals:
a.) Would the entirety of these funds be returned to the ApeCoin DAO treasury? If not, please clearly describe the proposed breakdown.
Currently, we are proposing that the revenue generated from subname registration fees and renewals would not be entirely directed to the ApeCoin DAO treasury.
Here’s the current proposed breakdown:
-
25% of the revenue would go to the ApeCoin DAO treasury, providing a substantial and sustainable income stream for future DAO initiatives, community rewards, ownership, and long-term ecosystem growth.
-
75% would be allocated to the ANS operations fund to cover development costs, maintenance, server/systems infrastructure, technological enhancements, and ongoing marketing to ensure that ANS continues to evolve and improve. This portion will help fund the ANS team’s work to make ANS a sustainable service over the long term, with a focus on stability and scalability.
b.) Would revenue generated from registration and renewal be returned to the DAO treasury in the form of $APE, or an alternative token?
Revenue generated from registration and renewal fees would be returned to the DAO treasury in the form of $APE whenever possible. This aligns with the ApeCoin ecosystem’s goals and reinforces $APE as a central token within the ApeCoin community.
In cases where users register or renew using other tokens (e.g., ETH), those funds would be converted to $APE before being transferred to the DAO treasury, maintaining consistency and strengthening the DAO’s $APE holdings.
4. Is there an expected schedule for the distribution of revenue back to the DAO treasury?
Yes, there is an expected schedule for the distribution of revenue back to the DAO treasury. Since the Apechain L2/L3 will be used for ANS transactions, we have the flexibility to implement micro-distributions due to the low transaction costs on these layers.
Revenue generated from subname registration fees and renewals can be streamed back to the DAO treasury in real-time or at minute-by-minute intervals, or as the security of the EVM technology will allow. This approach provides several benefits:
-
Continuous Revenue Flow: The DAO will receive a steady stream of funds, allowing for ongoing support of community initiatives and ecosystem growth.
-
Increased Transparency: Micro-distributions allow for highly transparent and traceable transactions.
-
Efficient Use of Layer 2/3 Scaling: Leveraging Apechain L2/L3’s scalability and low-cost transactions, we can efficiently manage high-frequency payouts without incurring excessive gas fees per the ability of the blockchain technology.
If real-time streaming is not preferable, we could also set-up aggregated distributions, hourly, daily, monthly, etc, as a middle ground to balance cost and operational needs.
5. Regarding the custody of the “ape.eth” ENS:
a.) Who would be responsible for maintaining custody of this ENS?
The custody of the “ape.eth” ENS name would be held in a secure multi-signature (multi-sig) wallet, ensuring decentralized control and robust security. This wallet would be established specifically for the ApeCoin DAO, with oversight from the DAO governance structure. The goal is to protect ape.eth as a valuable community asset, ensuring it is managed securely and transparently.
b.) Would a multi-sig be deployed for this purpose, and if so how many signers would be needed, and how would those signers be selected?
Yes, a multi-sig wallet would be deployed to maintain custody of the ape.eth ENS. The proposed setup is as follows:
-
Number of Signers: A 5-of-7 multi-sig configuration is recommended, where any 5 out of 7 signers are required to authorize transactions. This setup balances security with operational efficiency, making it resilient against potential signer unavailability or compromise.
-
Signer Selection: The signers would be selected from trusted members of the ApeCoin community and the ENS DAO, ensuring a mix of technical expertise and community alignment. Candidates for signers would ideally be voted on by the ApeCoin DAO to ensure transparency and community trust. Selected signers could include:
-
Core ANS team members with expertise in ENS and smart contracts.
-
Reputable ApeCoin community leaders who have a track record of active involvement and commitment to the DAO’s goals.
-
ENS protocol representatives, from ENS DAO and ENS Labs, to provide technical oversight and support from the ENS ecosystem.
The multi-sig setup ensures that no single party has control over ape.eth, reducing the risk of misuse or unauthorized changes. This approach aligns with best practices in crypto security and DAO governance, safeguarding the asset for the long-term benefit of the ApeCoin community.
6. Your proposed Tranches #3 and #4 are contingent upon “initial ANS smart contracts going live on testnet/ApeChain.” Please provide a tentative timeframe for each of these milestones.
Our goal is to launch the initial ANS smart contracts on Apechain’s testnet within a 3-4 month period following the acquisition of the ape.eth ENS domain.
Here’s the breakdown:
- Tranche #3 Milestone (Testnet Launch):
Tentative Timeframe: 3-4 months after securing ape.eth Milestone:
This will include 1. deploying the initial ANS smart contracts on the Apechain testnet, along with 2. a functional front-end interface that allows users to interact with the system. This phase will focus on testing core functionality, smart contract security, and user experience.
- Tranche #4 Milestone (Mainnet Launch):
Tentative Timeframe: 1-2 months following successful testnet deployment Milestone:
After successful testing and any required adjustments, the ANS contracts will go live on Apechain’s mainnet. This will also involve deploying 1. the final user interface, and 2. the name management tools, enabling users to register and manage their .ape.eth subnames on the live network.
These timeframes may adjust based on community feedback, testing outcomes, or unforeseen technical requirements, but we’re committed to delivering ANS on schedule while prioritizing both system security and stability.
7. Regarding the Reporting Expectations section:
- Please specify which Twitter/X account the reports would be made available.
Reports and updates will be made available on:
-
Twitter/X through the @garypalmerjr account, and
-
Posted in the designated forum for the official ApeCoin DAO.
-
Posted on the official ANS Website, which we have secured these ICANN “.com” domains:
-
ApechainNameService/.com
-
ApeNameService/.com
-
ApechainDomains/.com
-
ApechainDomain/.com
-
ApechainNames/.com
-
ApechainName/.com
-
ApeIdentity/.com
-
ApechainIdentity/.com
We will also explore establishing a dedicated Twitter account for the Ape.eth Name Service (ANS), as an additional source for ANS updates.
*** Include how long the reports would be expected to continue.**
We plan to continue reporting for at least 12 months post-launch of ANS on Apechain’s mainnet. This timeframe includes:
-
On-demand “Dune” reports covering user adoption, revenue metrics, and other onchain data, which can be queried via the Apechain blockchain.
-
Quarterly progress reports covering user adoption, technical updates, expenses, other revenue metrics, and ongoing development.
-
Annual comprehensive report summarizing the first year’s progress, including total registrations, revenue generated for the DAO, and insights for future growth.
After the first year, reporting frequency will be evaluated based on community interest and project needs, with a focus on ensuring transparency, security, and maintaining accountability.
8. You’ve outlined a Milestone #3 (“Launch and Growth Phase”) whose Associated Costs are listed as “TBD.” As this would impact your Overall Cost, please provide a tentative cost for this phase so that your Overall Cost may be updated accordingly.
For the Launch and Growth Phase, rather than allocating a separate upfront budget, we propose that the ongoing growth efforts for marketing, development, and community be funded through the 75% revenue share, from Ape.eth subname sales and renewals, to the ANS operations fund for the ANS team.
This approach allows for a sustainable, self-funded marketing and development model, which scales as adoption grows, and ensure that ANS continues to improve with sustainability and scalability.
With this setup:
** Marketing, community engagement, and partnership development expenses will be drawn from the revenue stream, creating a flexible and adaptive budget for growth.*
** This ensures that ANS’s long-term growth is aligned with the success of subname sales, allowing the DAO to benefit directly from increased adoption without needing additional upfront funding for this phase.*
Updated Overall Cost:
By covering Launch and Growth Phase costs through revenue, the Overall Cost remains at $1,500,000, as previously outlined, with no additional funding asked for ongoing “TBD” costs.
9. As per the ApeCoin General Guidelines, “proposals will not be put up for vote if they involve illegal activity, hate speech, pornographic material, or are at odds with the mission or values of the APE Foundation.” Can you ensure that the content resulting from this proposal (including ENS subnames) would be in keeping with these guidelines?
We recognize the importance of aligning with ApeCoin’s mission and values. However, in the context of decentralized technology and ENS subnames, enforcing strict content moderation poses challenges. ENS names are designed to provide sovereign digital identities and are fundamentally user-controlled, which limits our ability to enforce direct content restrictions.
That said:
1. User Responsibility: We encourage users to adhere to community standards and use names that align with ApeCoin’s mission and values.
2. DAO and Community Governance: We suggest that any specific content concerns be addressed through community-driven governance if issues arise, rather than attempting centralized moderation.
3. Decentralized Ethos: Given the nature of decentralized technology, we believe in empowering users with freedom and responsibility over their chosen identities, while trusting the community to self-moderate within the framework of ApeCoin’s values.
Ultimately, while we cannot fully control user-generated names in a decentralized system, we are committed to promoting a positive community environment and aligning with ApeCoin’s broader mission.
10. Regarding social media requests, the APE Foundation has introduced a social media request form to streamline the process of requesting tweets, retweets, and other social media activities. This form is currently accessible to approved AIP Authors, and requests would be considered at the discretion of the Ape Foundation.
Thank you for the information about the APE Foundation’s social media request form. We’ll make sure to use this form to submit any requests for tweets, retweets, or other social media support to help promote the Ape.eth Name Service (ANS).
We understand that all requests will be considered at the discretion of the Ape Foundation, and we appreciate this streamlined approach to coordinating social media activities in alignment with the Foundation’s communication strategy.
11. Do you provide consent to apply updates to the relevant areas of your proposal based on your responses to the questions above?

Kind Regards,
Who would own the ape.eth ENS?
Is it not possible to get them to agree a price in advance. If no price given it is very hard to vote on this AIP.
GM BigBull,
1…ASSET CUSTODY
The custody of the “ape.eth” ENS name would be held in a secure multi-signature (multi-sig) [SAFE] wallet, ensuring decentralized control and robust security. This wallet would be established specifically for the Ape.eth ENS, with oversight from the DAO governance structure. The goal is to protect ape.eth as a valuable community asset, ensuring it is managed securely and transparently.
- Number of Signers: A 5-of-7 multi-sig configuration is recommended, where any 5 out of 7 signers are required to authorize transactions.
- This setup balances security with operational efficiency, making it resilient against potential signer unavailability or compromise.
- Signer Selection: The signers would be selected from trusted members of the ApeCoin community, the ENS DAO, and the ANS team, ensuring a mix of technical expertise and community alignment.
- Selected signers could include:
- Core ANS team members with expertise in ENS and smart contracts.
- Reputable ApeCoin community leaders who have a track record of active involvement and commitment to the DAO’s goals.
- ENS protocol representatives, from ENS DAO and ENS Labs, to provide technical oversight and support from the ENS ecosystem.
The multi-sig setup ensures that no single party has control over ape.eth, reducing the risk of misuse or unauthorized changes. This approach aligns with best practices in crypto security and DAO governance, safeguarding the asset for the long-term benefit of the ApeCoin community.
2…Successful Acquisition:
- Update: Since last publishing and updating this AIP, the “ape.eth” owner has indicated an initial price for the ENS at 100 ETH; TBD.
- If we are not successful in acquiring the “ape.eth” domain name, then all unused funds will be returned to the APE DAO.
Please LMK if you have any other questions!
I mean it is owned by the Foundation or the ApeCoin DAO?
I was told that the ApeCoin DAO was not able to hold assets.
For the Foundation,
I am not sure if they are able to:
- hold assets, or
- be a multi-sig holder.
We would acquire the ENS asset, then we were intending to place it in a new multi-sig wallet.
I believe the best course of action, (for decentralized asset security), would be for the ENS-name to be held in a Safe-multi-sig wallet, (and the Foundation, if able, could be a multi-sig holder).
Depending on the decentralization and security of the Foundation, I am open to them being the asset owner of the Parent-level ENS domain name, (but decentralization and security is paramount).
Ultimately, the goal is to remove any “centralized control” of the Parent-level ENS domain name, without having to burn extra ENS fuses “too early”.
