ApeCoinDAO Cumulative Voting: Streamlining Sensible Elections

PROPOSAL AUTHOR: ALL CITY
PROPOSAL CATEGORY: Process Improvement
PROPOSAL NAME: ApeCoinDAO Cumulative Voting: Streamlining Sensible Elections

ABSTRACT:

This no-cost proposal provides a solution for an element of the ApeCoinDAO voting system that inhibits voters from being able to elect more than one person when multiple positions are being filled for the same role; without changing how constituents cast their votes now, should they choose not to adapt.

The concept is simple, if three Special Council Members are to be elected, you should have the ability to cast three votes for a say on who each of those new members should be; and the same for Working Group Stewards — leading to outcomes that will better reflect your needs.

This system is considered a form of cumulative voting, where votes can be weighted, and most commonly used by organizations electing business directors or board positions. It is also applied by government entities.

TEAM DESCRIPTION:

ALL CITY is an ApeCoinDAO Governance Working Group Steward who serves as a key strategist with a proven history authoring successful AIP proposals, GWG initiatives, and DAO-wide voting campaigns. His primary focuses include identifying potential contributors who can bring value to the ApeCoin ecosystem, improving the overall quality of AIPs submitted by the community, and increasing voter turnout.

The proposal is currently being discussed internally within the GWG and may be presented on behalf of the Governance Working group.

BENEFIT TO APECOIN DAO:

  1. Improved Voter Representation and Accuracy: Cumulative voting empowers ApeCoinDAO members to allocate their votes across multiple candidates when more than one position is being filled for the same role, reflecting what the community wants on a more granular level.
  2. Enhanced Transparency: Cumulative voting mitigates exclusive voting tendencies by prompting voters to consider a broader range of choices, and reducing the likelihood groups of coordinated voters supporting single candidates.
  3. Promoting Inclusivity: Cumulative voting enables voters to endorse various candidates with diverse perspectives at the same time, enhancing inclusivity and ensuring that multiple viewpoints can be represented.
  4. Increased Opportunities for Candidates: This system will generate more chances for qualified candidates, particularly those lacking extensive networks or individuals acknowledged by the community as promising proteges who could excel when working with the top candidates or existing elected members.

KEY TERMS:

Snapshot: Online voting platform that ApeCoinDAO uses allowing DAOs, DeFi protocols, and NFT communities to vote without gas fees.

Cumulative Voting: This system refers to electoral formats where voters have the ability to weight their votes in situations where multiple candidates are elected simultaneously for the same role within the same group.

Voting Strategy: A methodology used to calculate a user’s voting power when using Snapshot.

PLATFORMS & TECHNOLOGIES:

No new platforms or technologies will be required; however, an additional voting strategy may be required on Snapshot.

STEPS TO IMPLEMENT & TIMELINE:

If approved, ApeCoinDAO administration will update Snapshot ahead of the next election cycle and appropriate messaging should be communicated across standard DAO channels.

OVERALL COST:

There is no cost to implement this proposal.

Thanks as always for putting your ideas up, AC.

For clarification: let’s say there are three Special Council spots open in a field of, say, 40 nominees.

  1. I’d like to select my favorite three. Would my vote be split evenly (33.3% for each of my three candidates), or could I select the weight I choose to throw behind each candidate (say, 50% of my coins for my top choice, 25% each for the other two)?

  2. Would “ranked choice” voting be an option?

  3. Would it still be possible to choose only one option if a voter so chooses?

Glad you asked, as there are many nuances that should be considered. I’m also quite interested in what’s referred to as cumulative voting, which is essentially what I have described but with the added ability to weight your votes. For example, if three seats were up for election, you would have three votes to put all on one, or say two on one and one on another, or distribute them evenly among three candidates.

But all in all, I’m definitely not looking to rush this one; as I’m hoping to see a lot more feedback from the community before it advances :+1:

What you are suggesting is a combination of weighted voting (which we already use in round 1 of elections) and Approval Voting. However, approval voting doesn’t support a mix of weighted voting, so if you have 3 choices then they all count for 1/3rd of your vote each.

A new voting type might be possible but this would require snapshot team to role it out… However, there is a beauty in simplicity in terms of getting more APE to vote, we are already up to about 45m APE for the ApeChain AIP.

If people want to go down the Apehole read below:

Snapshot Voting Types

Voting type is defined in the space settings or at the level of an individual proposal (unless it has been already defined in the space settings) and can allow the users to:
