Governance Working Group Budget - Feedback Loop & Proposal

PROPOSAL NAME: Governance Working Group Budget
PROPOSAL CATEGORY: Ecosystem Fund Allocation
PROPOSAL AUTHORS: Governance Working Group

Copy of GOVERNANCE copy 2

The Governance Working Group is currently preparing a comprehensive progress report on the successful implementations of AIP-317 ApeCoinDAO Governance and Operations Budget, and its predecessor AIP-239 Working Group Guidelines & The Governance Working Group Charter.

Simultaneously, we are entering the initial idea phase for our next six-month budget cycle, set to open in March, and looking to build off strong AIP-317 community support by driving more value to the community through reducing monthly overhead and continuing to increase GWG output.

It is for these reasons that we are seeking your feedback on various aspects of the proposal, including initiative concepts, policy changes, community growth strategies, Governance Working Group sustainability and treasury planning, as well as identifying areas where research and development should be considered.

Please read through the following sections and engage in the comments.

SocialGovernance

Social Governance Initiatives are a core component of the Governance Working Group’s commitment to our community and a way for us to include them in meaningful ways whenever we can.

These programs also help drive success. From coming up with outstanding process improvement ideas to getting voting delegations together on the same calls it’s clear how important of a role these initiatives play improving ApeCoinDAO participation and fostering a robust, resilient community.

Here are a few programs that we will be continuing; and a few new ones that we are exploring:

  • Community Governance Improvement Program
  • Global Community Committee
  • ApeCoinDAO Alumni and AIP Author Achievement Program
  • AIP Pitch: Connecting AIP Authors with Delegations

EconomicSustainability

ApeCoinDAO Working Groups operate independently from the APE Foundation, which allows us to consider sustainability options that could help reduce overhead costs.

At one point, AIP-317 included a liquidity pool (LP) initiative aimed at subsidizing some of our operational costs, but not everyone was on board with that, so we put the brakes on it. However, we did initiate an economic sustainability study as part of the OKRs outlined in AIP-317, and we’re excited to share the options it explores with the community soon.

All of that being said, we need to hear from you. So take a moment of your time to use your voice below.

Should Working Groups Explore Economic Sustainability Initiatives?

EcosystemGrowth

In our current state, ApeCoin needs rapid ecosystem growth to ensure a sustainable future — and we need it now.

It’s also important to recognize that by expanding our community not only can we create more token demand, we create a magnet for developers to build on top of our upcoming ApeChain to increase use-cases and holder utility.

Here’s what we’re working on:

  • IP focused grant programs
  • Delegate expansion initiatives
  • Cross-community grant programs
  • Streamlined small grant opportunities
  • Aggressive community outreach approaches

Research&Development

Another ApeCoinDAO first to come out of AIP-317 was the GWG standardizing the importance of contracting research and development efforts that focus on areas where our community requires the most clarity. And from that budget, a comprehensive economic sustainability study will be presented to the community with clear pathways for AIP authors to explore revenue-sharing options with the DAO and for Working Groups to enhance their self-sufficiency.

What are some areas you think we should look at this cycle?

ProfessionalServiceProviders

The Governance Working Group aims to normalize the use of contractors and professional service providers, which is standard practice in any other field.

Why, you might ask? Well, given the size of our treasury and a community holder count of over 140,000 unique wallets, it is crucial for ApeCoin and the operations of ApeCoinDAO to function at peak performance, to steer us toward long-term sustainability and rapid growth. This is an effective strategic approach that the GWG has initiated since beginning the development of AIP-317, and a major reason why we can continue utilizing outside-of-the-box thinking, by tapping into professionals who are experts in their respective fields.

It’s also worth noting that the GWG was the first Working Group of any kind at ApeCoinDAO to bring in a legal team specializing in decentralized governance and offshore DAOs to develop an internal organizational structure and act as a review team before sending out any of our technical messaging.

Here are a few areas that we are looking into, do you have any ideas for a provider or two that could help ApeCoinDAO? If so let us know…

  • Legal
  • Discord security
  • Web and tooling developers
  • Content creator for GWG messaging on socials
  • Community growth specialists
  • R&D firms

TechAndAutomationTooling

One of the primary commitments that the Governance Working Group made to the ApeCoinDAO community after AIP-317 passed was to reduce our monthly overhead through the use of administration automation tools. This is one of the main reasons we’re so excited about the GWG x UMA On-Chain Grants Program.

Through the implementation of this initiative, we will be able to shift away from a significant portion of manual administration requirements for certain types of grants. And given the interest in this program from both in and outside of our immediate ecosystem, we anticipate the development of programs built on top of this initiative that could transform the ApeCoinDAO environment indefinitely.

It’s also essential to recognize the importance of other tech stacks for the smooth and efficient workflow that a properly operating team needs. Some of these costs include project management tools like Notion and communication platforms like email and Slack.

Do you know any tooling options that you wanted to recommend? Well now’s your chance, so drop your suggestions in the comments below so that we can start checking them out.

END.

Good going gang!
Big hopes from you guys and this looks amazing, I just have mixed feeling regarding " Professional Service Providers" section. Going back to Carten group, where they took care of forums and we all know how slow the process was, hence one of the reasons why WG0 was created and the stepping stones of the discord server we all share came into existence.
With this " Professional Service Providers" we’ll be going 10 steps back, specially because often times third party dont share the same goal of web3 and culture that we guys have. There are plenty of talented people here in our NFT community who have necessary expertise to do the same, and that too happily paid in crypto instead of fiat.

Long story short, I cant put my trust in the hands of third party services who will most likely greet with " Hey, how may I help you" in a strict 8 hours a day, Mon-Sat thing lol

A service provider can come in many different forms, e.g.:

  1. Law firm
  2. IT company
  3. Contractor which could be as small as a one person company.

Payments could be in USD, ETH or APE. There is no specification that says a contract could not be in APE, or in USD but paid in APE at the time of transfer.

Individual consultants could also be hired, but they would be responsible for their personal tax obligations, just as companies are responsible for their own obligations.

Understandable, thanks for the clarification BB!
What difference would it make with Content Creators/Social Media management team when Mark and Comms Stewards exist? I mean what would be the difference between these two then?

Evil! Appreciate you chiming in here, as feedback like this is exactly what we are looking to round-up in this state of the proposal’s infancy.

One thing that’s important to remember, is that ApeCoinDAO Working Groups operate distinctly autonomously from one another, so although we’re eager to be working together on the large majority of communication strategies, we also need to consider their already large scope of duties, which expands well-beyond just the GWG; so we can’t expect them to allocate the amount of day-to-day time that will be required for us to achieve the visibility goals we are looking to reach, and Stewards simply don’t have the room in our schedule for these types of duties.

Also, to be clear, we are referring to governance-specific information that we plan to distribute through our own channels; and not necessarily the primary ApeCoin Twitter page.

Hope that helps

Ah ok, this makes much more sense! Thanks for explaining this. Also I forgot to put this out yesterday coz it slipped my mind, but suggesting to put Asana around project management tool. I’ve used it personally within my start up and its far better than Slack that is in a way only limited to just texting, call it a professional discord instead. With Asana you can do much more and its monthly subscription is decent enough as well, specially consider that GWG team might grow in coming months.

Ooooooh… Love this. And quite curious about Asna now! Thanks for the tip!!

Hope to see the budget well under $500K then. Thanks.

We should see the execution and implementation of the previous approved budget in a table, then discuss the future budget.

Interesting, can you share the link to the previous Working Group budget? iirc it was mainly focus towards RFP of third parties which never really got update about and rest was onto the GWG team consisting of stewards, facilitators and secretary. So nothing much about update on that. I can be wrong, read that long time ago

There is a great deal to update. Regarding RFPs, the team had and still has to work with the professional service providers to deliver certain OKRs. It isn’t a simple 100% outsource to them arrangement.

Both AIP-239 and AIP-317 need transparency updates. The historic quarterly reports need some rework and latest quarter report Q4 2023 is still outstanding.

P.S. hmm, Have to agree with @buuvei on this one, cant see many of the previously mentioned things.
