AIP Name: AIP-279: Bored Apes Storm Hollywood (BASH-AIP): Expanding the Ecosystem with Battle-tested IP Veteran and the Batman Producers

Implementation Status: Pending

Author: @AmericanApe

Abstract Summary: This proposal aims to expand the ApeCoin DAO ecosystem through the creation of an animated series pilot and three spin-off comic books, featuring characters owned by ApeCoin DAO holders. We envision a gritty, action-packed, and comedic, anime-inspired adaptation of the American Ape comic book series that prominently features ApeCoin as the primary currency of the Metaverse, reaching beyond the echo chamber of “Crypto Twitter” that is primed to be pitched directly to international streamers via our producing team’s existing development, production and distribution pipelines.

Overall Cost: $300,000 USD

The Great News: Despite major setbacks during the bear, including severe lack of interest from producers, animators and distributors in Hollywood, including losing a key animator to other more recognizable IP work, I managed to find a big studio & production partner willing to help us develop the project into a full season of the series. The bear really had us up against a wall in terms of finding interested parties to help us move the project forward, but I kept pushing regardless in the hopes that someone would see the potential. Though the final number of episodes for the first season and the production timeline are not currently decided on, I am thrilled to share that the project has expanded and will be able to move forward in a big way! Because of this massive opportunity, the budget needs have increased significantly, but this is mostly due to our need for a full scale anime production partner taking precedence over rushing into production. So, we do need more time to complete the mission, but it’s going to be bigger and better than we originally planned.

One of our next steps is finalizing which key crew members will be joining us from Japan and which roles we can outsource to teams in other areas including Taiwan and here in the US, but we need to finalize our deal terms, budget and timelines with our main studio production partner on this. I can’t reveal which studio we are partnering with, but it is a new, large one with sufficient backing, that will be supporting us financially, along with some outside funding to supplement the amount we received from the DAO.

Right now, we don’t need much active support beyond keeping our heads to the grindstone to finalize our production deal terms with the studio, staffing for the full season, and moving right into production on the project. We will however need more time before that first episode is complete, as we plan to produce it along with the rest of the season to save on costs. We originally planned to bootstrap a short pilot with the 300K within about 18 months, but this has expanded massively and we want to make sure the quality and talent on the first Episode matches the rest of the season. So, though we are in the process of securing a larger budget to accomplish this, we’re not currently seeking more funds from the Apecoin DAO, instead focusing on independent funding and financing from the studio partner while we simultaneously secure distribution for the first and possibly more seasons. The initial funding has been a major boon in helping us get through the majority of the development process, secure a larger production partner and in securing more funding commitments for the full season. On another note, I am adamantly staying true to the traditional definition of “Anime,” which originates in Japan, so I, along with our new studio partners have begun reaching out to our network among Japanese anime studios to help with that aspect of this.

This month, our goal is to finalize the terms of the overall production agreement for a full season, with plans to execute the agreement and begin onboarding more talent within 5-6 weeks. Our partners at IP3 have helped us tremendously throughout this process, and our relationship has deepened over the last year, which means there will be a lot more I can announce soon. This new relationship dynamic is also relevant to the accompanying Comic Book anthology stories, which we plan to time the release of major physical and digital distribution closer to Season 1’s production completion. All that said, we are looking at another 2-3 months of development, with production of the full series kicking off by summer. Though production will take much longer, our goal is to have a teaser ready for San Diego Comic Con 2025, where we plan to have a presence again, this time to market the American Ape IP and comics series and have further discussions with major distributors. The good news is with crypto regulations beginning to gain mainstream attention and favorable conditions being pushed by the new administration, momentum has picked up again and it is moving quickly now.

I have no problem with any of this information being shared publicly to the community and even happy join on a community spaces next month to talk more about it and reveal any other relevant details I can. Thanks for the patience and support as I’ve been navigating these unprecedented waters. The future is bright for this project and I am looking forward to sharing more in a few weeks, but the community should feel free to reach out directly with any questions. I will answer what I can without breaking NDAs!
