🟢 Implementation Update | AIP-552: Pausing Special Council elections pending the outcome of the Governance Revamp AIP vote

With the passing of AIP-582: ApeChain, On-chain – ApeCoin DAO Governance Revamp, the APE Foundation has stated:

Upon the passage of this AIP, for the sake of continuity and in light of a monumental change to the ApeCoin DAO governance system, the current Special Council members’ terms will each be extended for 6 months. All AIPs which have been approved by the DAO pertaining to Special Council elections will continue to be effective, including holding Special Council elections via Snapshot votes.

With this, barring any updates the next Special Council elections would take place in advance of the next Special Council commencement, presently scheduled for July 1, 2025.

We’d also like to take this opportunity to clarify the implications of the existing Proposal Description for AIP-552, stated as the following:

PROPOSAL DESCRIPTION:

The APE Foundation has recently posted a proposal to revamp ApeCoin DAO governance, entitled “ApeChain, On-chain – ApeCoin DAO Governance Revamp”. That proposal would eliminate Special Council elections, sunsetting the role of Special Council entirely.

AIP-552 was passed prior to AIP-582’s final Draft, and to clarify: the Special Council will not be sunsetted, but rather modified in scope and responsibility. A summary of these changes can be found in the following excerpts:

Clarifying that Special Council members are no longer involved in the AIP process… and the Special Council will instead act purely as ambassadors of the ApeCoin DAO once on-chain governance has been implemented. This would include advocating for the ApeCoin DAO and the ApeCoin ecosystem, educating others outside of the DAO and providing advice and guidance to members of the DAO and Foundation.

With this, this proposal has been implemented as of January 29, 2025 and is now marked as Complete.
