AIP-385: GWG Delegate Accelerator

PROPOSAL NAME: GWG Delegate Accelerator - Increase decentralisation by the expansion of active and functional delegations
PROPOSAL AUTHOR: BigBull
PROPOSAL CATEGORY: Informational Proposal

TEAM DESCRIPTION:

The ApeCoinDAO Governance Working Group (GWG) serves as a critical component of ApeCoin’s decentralized governance, ensuring a seamless and transparent decision-making process within the ecosystem.

GWG Stewards BigBull and ALL CITY will oversea the program.

ABSTRACT:

This proposal presents a strategic initiative to expand ApeCoinDAO participation by empowering communities to expand functional and active voting delegations and focusing on three key pillars:

  • Matched Funds: Match funds up to 100,000 APE to incentivize and attract communities to actively participate in the delegate voting process; while keeping the APE safely secured in a dedicated GWG gnosis safe(s).

  • Education and Training: Develop education and training programs covering ApeCoin and ApeCoinDAO-focused communications, technical aspects, and security. This ensures a well-informed and secure network of communities, contributing to a knowledgeable and resilient ApeCoin ecosystem.

  • Incentive Models: Develop incentive models similar to those implemented by Mocaverse (mocana.eth) to motivate and reward participating communities for growing their delegations. The program will be rolled out as a Governance Working Group initiative falling within their official scope of duty, and incur no additional operational costs.

The total funding request will be outlined in a future AIP, with the entire allocated amount securely locked into a Gnosis Safe(s) to be utilized as delegated voting tokens, where no funds will leave the safe(s) or change hands throughout the program’s execution.

In the event that the proposal is deemed unsuccessful, the full amount of ApeCoin transferred for the project will be returned to the APE Foundation, in full.

BENEFIT TO APECOIN DAO:

  1. Increased Voting: Significantly expand the amount of voting within ApeCoinDAO, ensuring a more decentralised and inclusive decision-making process.

  2. Wider Adoption of ApeCoin: Promote broader adoption of ApeCoin by actively involving diverse communities, leading to increased demand and utility for APE.

  3. Community Relations: Establish strong community relations, potentially leading to the development of more projects powered by ApeCoin. Strengthening these connections creates a supportive network for sustained growth and collaboration.

  4. Economic Inclusion: The program promotes economic inclusion by providing smaller communities with the opportunity to actively participate in the ApeCoin ecosystem, contributing to a more diverse and economically inclusive environment.

  5. Network Effect: As the program expands, it generates a positive network effect, attracting more communities to join and further amplifying the impact of decentralized governance within ApeCoinDAO.

  6. Innovation Hub: By fostering cross-community leadership protocols, the program transforms ApeCoinDAO into an innovation hub where communities can collaborate, share ideas, and contribute to the ongoing development of the ecosystem.

KEY TERMS:

  • Gnosis Safe: A Gnosis Safe is a smart contract-based digital wallet or safe designed for securely managing and storing digital assets, including cryptocurrencies like ApeCoin.

  • Delegation: In the ApeCoinDAO, ApeCoin acts as a governance token providing the ability to vote on proposals that help shape the ecosystem. Delegations provide an option to share voting power with a trusted entity, allowing them to represent your interests based on their judgment and group preferences without any APE actually changing hands.

PLATFORMS & TECHNOLOGIES:

Platforms include Gnosis Safe, Discord, Discourse, Snapshot and Twitter.

STEPS TO IMPLEMENT & TIMELINE:

Upon a successful vote to move forward with the program we anticipate that our funding allocation request will be prepared within 2-4 weeks. Once APE has been received, the initiative should be activated within 7-10 days.

Phase 1: Foundation and Exploration

  • Research potential matched funding models and gather community feedback.
  • Develop Education and Training Framework: Outline core topics, and solicit community input on training needs.
  • Finalize how communities will be chosen.
  • Research Incentive Models: Analyze existing models like Mocaverse, assess feasibility, and seek community feedback on preferences.
  • Community outreach to prospective communities.
  • Determine appropriate funding allocation.
  • Write funding request into an AIP.

Phase 2: Launch

  • Select up to five communities to participate in the pilot program.
  • Onboard.
  • Launch.

Phase 4: Expansion and Full Implementation, or Termination

  • Review Metrics and Feedback. Assess program effectiveness against KPIs, gather community feedback.
  • If deemed successful determine interest levels and determine appropriate increase of allocated funds.
  • If deemed unsuccessful terminate the program and release all allocated funds back to the APE Foundation.
  • Expand Education and Training Programs: Deliver comprehensive training to delegations and provide ongoing support.
  • Implement Incentive TBD Models.

Phase 5: Evaluation and Iteration (Ongoing)

  • Regularly Review Metrics and Feedback: Assess program effectiveness against KPIs, gather community feedback, and make adjustments accordingly.
  • Iterate and Improve: Continuously refine the program based on data and feedback to ensure it remains aligned with community needs and ApeCoinDAO goals.

Finally, the proposal is inline with the guiding values of APE Foundation:Boldness, Equality, Transparency, Collective Responsibility and Persistence.

OVERALL COST:

There is NO COST to implement this proposal.

Hi @bigbull,

It’s truly inspiring to witness your proactive leadership even before formally assuming a position. Your dedication to engaging with the community and initiating an AIP is commendable, though not unexpected given your track record.

I fully support your initiative to collaborate with other communities. This not only strengthens the core aspect of decentralization but also reflects a commitment to inclusivity and collaboration within the broader ecosystem.

Q - Does this AIP is a following up proposal of AIP-292 lead by @NFD ?

I particularly appreciate the emphasis on education and training - I think classes like boring security doing, can be a good starting point of how to educate in terms to become a delegation community. Regarding the incentive models, I don’t think Mocaverse is an example, individual holder not benefit to encouraging active participation - I do had other idea which I think can help in terms of incentive model and your vision:

I look forward to participating in the ongoing discussions within the Governance Working Group and contributing to the success of this initiative.

Glad that delegate initiative can start getting support.

Making sure smaller voices get heard was the reason to start it, and we need more of these delegates to represent the different voices around the globe.

Hey @bigbull thanks for putting this together. Does this AIP idea include any plans to help organize delegate information so it’s easier for community members to find and learn more about each group?

I know a few community members have had preliminary discussions on what something like this might look like. I was curious if a tool to help address that would be part of this.

I like this Big Bull, there is a lot of smaller communities in web 3 that can bring their communities to the DAO

Would love to work with you on defining what ‘active’ and ‘functional’ mean in this context. imho there’s a lot of potential directions those two words could go, especially when there’s a lot of people involved, and the success of those two words becomes like a foundation for the success of the whole initiative

Some food for thought; (just general brainstorm/discussion topics)
Re ‘active’, maybe tracking and publicly displaying in a leaderboard of sorts;

  • Voting streaks, consecutive voting by delegate
  • Forum activity, response times to authors
  • Clarifying primary preferred communication method with Authors (some delegates prefer forum, others prefer Discord, others prefer Twitter, TG, WeChat etc, needs to be streamlined or at least clarified which to use)
  • Somehow singling to future authors proactively, what type of proposals the delegates want to see. Signaling to increase alignment, instead of authors writing proposals no-one wants
  • Increased visibility based on activity, climbing the leaderboard etc

Re ‘Functional’

  • Letting people chose multiple delegates, in sequence, so if a delegate fails to vote, the delegatee’s vote automatically moves to the next delegate in their queue, no lost votes, and no damage if a delegate goes MIA
  • Having some mechanism for delegates to discuss more directly together, the monthly meetings have been great so far, wondering what a good follow up ‘in-between’ comm method could be to keep convos going in between those monthly meetings
  • Fixing the snapshot API issue to ensure proper vote counts are being displayed (working on this one, just putting it in here for transparency)

Just a few thoughts while sipping coffee while still on vacation, looking forward to coming back and supporting more :sunglasses: :+1:

Thanks for the feedback. FYI, I will edit the initial feedback soon, just organised it first.

Good to also get others feedback, so I will adjust this draft accordingly.

Potential to create a leaderboard of delegation or expand this function on the main apecoin website.

Active
  • Voting streaks, consecutive voting by delegation.
  • Increased visibility based on activity, climbing the leaderboard.

Questions

  • Forum activity, response times to authors.
I think they won’t want this kind of monitoring.
Functional
  • Having some mechanism for delegates to discuss more directly together, the monthly meetings have been great so far, wondering what a good follow up ‘in-between’ comm method could be to keep convos going in between those monthly meetings
  • Fixing the snapshot API issue to ensure proper vote counts are being displayed (working on this one, just putting it in here for transparency)

Questions

  • Letting people chose multiple delegates, in sequence, so if a delegate fails to vote, the delegatee’s vote automatically moves to the next delegate in their queue, no lost votes, and no damage if a delegate goes MIA.
By using gnosis backed delegation they can easily change who is managing the delegation. This solves the issue of inactive delegation leaders.

What do you think about Delegations getting rewarded with ApeCoin voting rights from the ApeCoin Dao outside of the APE their community has delegated?

If this is done, should it be proportional? or taper down as their delegation gains voting power? E.g. Do we ask for an allocation from the ApeCoin Dao to match or partially match Apecoin.

Anytime! Happy to be a part of this discussion :+1:

Do you mean like direct from the ApeCoin treasury? Sorry not sure I understood what you meant exactly, wanted to double check first

So long as they actually go back and check in, I just meant setting up a couple failsafes in advance to automatically kick in
