Bored Statues: Bringing NFT IPs to Life as Premium Collectibles

TEAM DESCRIPTION:

Our team consists of experts in additive manufacturing, 3D engineering, blockchain development, and IP management. Leading the project is CryptoSheep (Founder, Creative Director), who established the platform NFT2Print in mid-2021, successfully bridging the gap between NFTs and physical collectibles. With over 1,000 statues sold, the platform proved the demand and viability for high-quality, Web3 IP-backed collectibles.

CryptoSheep brings a wealth of experience in additive manufacturing, digital art, and blockchain technology, now spearheading the Bored Statues project to expand into premium physical NFT merchandise.

The team is supported by an in-house blockchain developer managing Web3 integrations, while working closely with Gentle Giant Studios, known for their work on iconic franchises like Star Wars, The Lord of the Rings, World of Warcraft, and the MCU.

We are also advised by Andy Keimach, former President of VTech Electronics North America, guiding our production strategy.

PROPOSAL DESCRIPTION:

Bored Statues is creating a platform that will allow NFT holders to transform their digital assets into high-quality, physical collectibles. Using additive manufacturing (3D printing) technology, we’ll cater to Web3 IPs like Bored Ape Kennel Club (BAKC), expanding later to other NFT collections such as Bored Ape Yacht Club (BAYC). Each collectible will be made-to-order, ensuring exclusivity, and will be crafted with the precision and quality demanded by collectors worldwide.

The dimensions of the collectibles will be highly customizable, as we utilize additive manufacturing (3D printing) technology. Customers will have the flexibility to choose sizes, with options ranging from small desk-sized collectibles (e.g., 3-7 inches) to larger statement pieces (up to 18-24 inches or more). The price will scale with the size of the collectible.

The cost of producing a 3D statue will depend on the size and level of customization (e.g., size, material upgrades, or limited edition designs) chosen by the user. For reference, smaller statues may start at approximately $100, while larger and more intricate designs could range up to several hundred dollars up to thousands. We will ensure pricing is transparent and competitive.

By partnering with Gentle Giant Studios, known for their high-quality collectibles in franchises such as Star Wars, The Lord of the Rings, and The Walking Dead, we aim to deliver the same premium craftsmanship to the Web3 space.

BENEFIT TO APECOIN ECOSYSTEM:

Bored Statues will elevate the status of IP NFTs within the ApeCoin ecosystem by providing a physical touchpoint for the digital assets that drive the space. With ApeCoin integrated into the payment system, we will allow holders of IP-backed NFTs to create, sell, and collect these one-of-a-kind statues. As this platform scales, more users from outside the Web3 space will be drawn to ApeCoin as a means to access exclusive, verified, and high-quality products.

Our ambition is to capture 0.01% of the $7.2 billion global figurine market, which translates into a potential revenue of $720 thousand.

By creating a platform for IP-backed collectibles, we will empower NFT holders to engage in a whole new marketplace, driving adoption and cementing Web3’s place in the broader consumer product ecosystem.

DEFINITIONS:

• Additive Manufacturing: A process of creating objects by layering material based on digital models (also known as 3D printing).
• IP NFTs: Non-fungible tokens that represent intellectual property rights to digital assets, often linked to a larger brand or franchise.
• AML: Anti-Money Laundering, ensuring all transactions comply with legal standards.
• KYC/KYB: Know Your Customer / Know Your Business, a verification process ensuring legitimate use and ownership of assets.

STEPS TO IMPLEMENT:

1. Platform Development:

• Tasks: Develop the base platform, integrate NFT verification, and implement secure payment options ($APE & fiat).
• Timeline: Months 1-3.
• Cost: $35,000.
  • Marketing Allocation: $5,000 (for early-stage awareness and announcements).
    

2. 3D Engineering & Re-engineering:

• Tasks: Convert the 10K avatar collections into 3D-compatible files and collaborate with Gentle Giant Studios on prototypes.
• Timeline: Months 2-5.
• Cost: $35,000.
  • Marketing Allocation: $15,000 (focus on demonstrating progress with prototypes and collaboration updates).

3. Manufacturing & Partnerships:

• Tasks: Initiate production with Gentle Giant Studios and secure shipping/logistics partnerships for key regions (USA, Europe, Asia).
• Timeline: Months 3-6.
• Cost: $55,000.
  • Marketing Allocation: $30,000 (emphasize partnership announcements, manufacturing progress, and engaging influencers).

4. BAYC Bust Expansion:

• Tasks: Develop and launch BAYC busts as an additional product.
• Timeline: Month 6.
• Cost: $40,000.
  • Marketing Allocation: $5,000 (for targeted announcements related to this product launch).
    

5. Marketing and Launch:

• Tasks: Comprehensive marketing campaign with community events and influencer partnerships.
• Timeline: Months 5-6.
• Cost: $10,000.
  • Marketing Allocation: Entire $10,000 (mainly focused on product launch and brand activation).

REPORTING EXPECTATIONS:

• We will submit biannual reports (every 6 months) to the ApeCoin DAO Discourse Forum, providing updates on platform development, production milestones, and financial transparency.
• Reporting will continue until the completion of the entire project, estimated at 6 months post-launch, with final reporting covering launch success and community engagement metrics.

OVERALL COST:

Total requested from the ApeCoin Ecosystem Fund = $175,000 USD

• $35,000: Platform development & BAKC integration (Cloud services, APIs, 3D file re-engineering for additive manufacturing)
• $35,000: Security audits, KYC/KYB, and AML compliance
• $55,000: Marketing, community events, and influencer partnerships
• $40,000: Development for BAYC busts
• $10,000: Customer service and legal fees (legal consultation, tax compliance, payment distribution)

FUNDING TRANCHES

1. Milestone 1: Initial Platform Development (Months 1-3)

• Platform build, NFT verification, and payment system setup.
• Disbursement: $45,000 (30% of total; includes development and part of marketing).
• Why: Critical foundational phase that sets up the core functionality, requiring the most immediate funds.

2. Milestone 2: 3D Engineering & Initial Prototypes (Months 2-5)

• Completing 3D files and first set of prototypes with Gentle Giant.
• Disbursement: $40,000 (25% of total; includes engineering and significant marketing push).
• Why: Funding needed for prototype development and larger marketing efforts to build momentum.

3. Milestone 3: Manufacturing & Partnership Finalization (Months 3-6)

• Start manufacturing and secure logistics partnerships.
• Disbursement: $50,000 (35% of total; largest portion allocated for production setup and major marketing campaigns).
• Why: Bulk of the funds required for production ramp-up, partnerships, and more aggressive marketing.

4. Milestone 4: BAYC Bust Expansion (Month 6)

• Development of the additional product line (BAYC busts).
• Disbursement: $30,000 (20% of total; focuses on final product development and launch-specific marketing).
• Why: This milestone marks the diversification of the product line and a final push in marketing for the launch.

5. Milestone 5: Full Marketing & Launch (Months 5-6)

• Final phase with a comprehensive marketing launch including community events and influencer activations.
• Disbursement: $10,000 (10% of total; entirely for final-stage marketing efforts).

Q. Since this is an established business, for such a small $175K ask, why no rev share to the DAO? Heck, you could ask for $249K + rev share. Seems like a no-brainer to me.

one major concern I see with this is the limited scalability of the business. By allowing holders to order statues of their specific NFTs, you’re essentially cutting the customer pool down to a limited number of people that wish to purchase a copy of their assets. Most holders might also just want to buy one copy of their NFT statues.

have you considered alternative models to address this scalability challenge? For instance, would you be open to partnering with NFT holders to generate statues of their NFTs and then offer these for sale to a wider audience, potentially with a revenue-sharing agreement with the holder? That could expand your customer base while still respecting and rewarding ownerships.

But afaik Yuga has already made BAYC 3D models available for each and every holders. I’ve been waiting for Apechain to launch so that I can apply my own MBA license for my studios. I had a similar idea but in my experience I realized that even tho the idea is good, the concept of collecting 3D printed sculpture is nice but expensive. Figurines is a 10/10 yes and this is something you would absolutely dig in! Whereas my problem is that we do this hand crafted specially once 3D model is created, from 2ft statue to 6ft, NFT mask to small toys but not something like print ready 3D models as it would consume too much time already with a limited audience.
Even meebits were readily available yet number of people who have their own meebits 3D printed or gifted is very low.
As someone who is already doing this I hope you are able to get this AIP out there with your connections with the stewards coz the community would never support me or other builders who actually wanted to do something bold and unique.
