SANDDAO Podcast 25 With SmartApe

Some weeks ago, after hearing me speak at various Spaces, including the Sat sessions on the BoTB Spaces, Lanzer reached out to me to ask if I would be interested in coming to talk to him about our DAO, the challenges etc. I agreed. And so, he setup a session. A few days ago we had a discussion that lasted a little over an hour. We covered many topics and we had some hilarious parts. Check it out.

You can listen/view the discussion on Spotify and YouTube.

Listened to the whole thing. I can’t disagree that up until recently, this has been a grants DAO. So it isn’t surprising that we will eventually run out of funds. I am curious to see what happens with funds coming back from BB, and what that will look like.

I wish you could be convinced that you can do more inside than outside, but you seem pretty firm on this conviction.

I’m excited to learn more about Sandbox DAO and potentially getting more involved on that front.

I still have a lot to learn about that though.

It’s still a grants DAO. Just because there was a proclamation back in Nov 2023, and which I wrote about at the time, doesn’t change anything. That was 10 months ago, and we still haven’t brought in a single cent; this despite the numerous projects that have come through here, received funding, and never to be heard from again. e.g. even as I type this, a team got $150K to “promote DookeyDash” and they basically rugged - even as DDU was released in the past days.

I’ve been singing this song forever and a day. Those who paid attention understood the ramifications, but yet still, just like our current and dismal Q1/24 financial statements, only few of us have expressed concern about where we’re headed financially. Everyone else, either their collective heads are in the sand or they just don’t care enough to say anything.

I don’t see how it would make any difference. There is currently no requirement for a project to return rev to the DAO - unless they are going through the BB which makes it a requirement. And so, whatever comes in, is going to go right back out - regardless of what protections are in place. Which is why I wrote this proposal AIP-505: Improving Funding Allocations To Benefit The DAO

For e.g. after AIP-436 passed and which introduced the $250K / 69% threshold, this proposal went from $480K to $246K. AIP-452: Expanding APE ecosystem via SOG - Revolutionary Blockchain MOBA Game

As someone who has built and run teams in both public and private sectors around the world, I know all too well the value of collab and team work. However, in the case of our DAO, I don’t believe that my values are aligned with the general sentiments in the DAO and how things are run. That’s not how a team works. If I had any inkling that my contributions would be effective, not face opposition because people prefer the status quo, I would have considered it. But the fact remains, whether it’s the SC or GwG, I am but one guy in a group and not likely to be effective. I do things for a specific reason and my motivations are always rooted in the desire to be better, do better, and to always act with integrity.

In fact, back when I first joined the DAO and saw the MwG was going to be a thing, I was interested in leading that. But as time went on, what I saw in the DAO caused me to change my mind. I subsequently withdrew my interest. Here we are.

And so, I would much rather stay on the outside looking in.
